Academic Achievement and Neuroticism of Hashemite University Students

Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to identify the levels of Neuroticism “N” as a dimension of personality among college students’, the differences of “N” among the highest and lowest academic achievers, the relationship between neuroticism and academic achievement, and the differences in neuroticism between males and females. The study’s scales were Barron’s Ego Strength Scale, and (GPA).These scales were applied on a sample of Hashemite University students, consisting of 232 males and females. The results of study showed a high percentage of students (40% of the sample) suffering from neuroticism, and a significant correlation (r =0.293, p<.01) on Ego Strength Scale between neuroticism and academic achievement. The differences among the highest and the lowest academic achievers on neuroticism were significant (t (97) = 4.37) =, p<0.01), and the results of Analysis of Variances between males and females on neuroticism showed significant differences (f (1,95) = 4.25 p<05) in favour of females, indicating an overall gender effect on personality.
