Abstract:
The research aimed at knowing the values system of Sultan Qaboos University students and their big five factors; as well as the relation between these factors and values. To achieve this both All port, Vernon and Lindzey test [translated by Hana (1986)] and the big five factors list of Costa and McCrae [translated by Al Ansari (1997)] were applied. The sample comprises 63 male and female students. Data analysis using SPSS revealed a value system composed of religious, political, theoretical, socio-economic, and aesthetical values. Factor analysis of the big five factors disclosed three bi-poled factors (conscientiousness/extraversion, agreeableness/openness, neuroticism/extraversion, and two uni-poled factors (neuroticism/agreeableness). Regarding the third objective, correlation coefficients matrix shows one significant coefficient only as to correlation between religious values and the first factor (conscientiousness/extraversion). This finding was attributed to the psychological values independence from the big five factors since that referred to the psychological nature of each concept.
