Abstract:
The research aims at examining the methods of teaching and teaching aids commonly used by teachers of history in the preparatory Schools in Ninevah Governorate in Iraq. The sample of this study consists of (90) teachers. The instrument of the research was a questionnaire including (45) items the responses to each range between: always to sometimes - rarely - I don’t use it. The weighted means, the T-test and Pearson’s coefficient were the statistical tools used in the data analysis. The findings indicate that the more commonly used teaching methods were questioning and answering , discussion and lecture methods and then the methods of problem solving and teaching units. With regards to the teaching aids, the results indicate the scarcity of using modern aids and technology. The major reliance has been on the blackboard, the text book and the historical maps as teaching aids. The results show that the female teachers use the textbook more than the males, while the males use the blackboard more than the females. There has also been statistical differences among the males and females due to the field of study (History-Geography) in the method of discussion. The differences have been in favour of the history teachers. The finding revealed statistical differences among the teachers graduating from Colleges of Arts and Education in using the method of problems solving, and the differences have been in favour of the graduates of the College of Education. In addition to that, findings indicate statistical differences between the participants and non- participants in the in-service courses in using three teaching aids: sources, films and visits. These differences were in favour of non-participants. In the light of the results, recommendations and suggestions have been introduced.
