The Effect of Using Multimedia in Teaching English on the Achievement of Third Primary Grade Pupils

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the effect of using multimedia in instruction on the achievement of third grade students in the “English” course. To achieve this, an instructional computer-based program using Visual Basic 6.0 programming language was designed for the second unit of the “Action Pack 3” English textbook for the third primary grade entitled “Letters, words and numbers.” The sample of the study comprised 150 students who were selected from four public schools in Al-Zarqa governorate that accepted to participate in the study and were distributed randomly over two studying groups: an experimental group (75 students) taught using the computer-based multimedia program, and a control group (75 students) taught using the traditional method. Two achievement tests were also developed and applied to the two groups. The results of the study revealed statistically significant differences in the achievement means between the two groups in favor of the experimental group that was taught using the computer-based multimedia program. In light of this, the study recommended the necessity of conducting similar studies that examine different units of other courses such as Arabic, Mathematics, and Science. It also recommended the necessity of providing specialists in designing and producing computer-based multimedia programs in different subjects of the primary education stage.
